Stafford remains on the stand
On Jan. 8, 2006, Maj. Stafford got a call that a pair of eyeglasses was found in the hotel room where Emily Anderson's truck had been found. He testified this morning he did not follow up on that. He said it should have been done, but it was not. Stafford said the glasses could have been important to case. Emily Anderson was known to wear glasses. When her body was found, the glasses were not found. But the sheriff's office did not make any effort to retrieve the glasses. Unless the defense calls someone to testify about the glasses, it sounds like we will never know if those eyeglasses belonged to Emily Anderson. What if they did? Did that mean Emily was in a hotel room in Duncan, S.C.?
Apparently, there are several things Dubs questioned Stafford about that he did not do or did not do right away. On Jan. 7, 2006, he got a list of people who checked into the Quality Inn on Dec. 29, 2005. Emily Anderson's name was not on the list. In November 2006, Stafford called a few people that checked in that day. None remembered seeing Emily. Stafford wasn't able to get in touch with everyone. He testified he did not check any other dates of check ins at the Quality Inn. Dubs asked Stafford if he or any other investigator talked to a Steve Killian. Apparently, Mr. Killian thought he saw Emily Anderson after she was reported missing, but Stafford said no one talked to him. "It didn't get done. There's no reason for that."
The defense is definitely pulling out all the strings to make it look like sheriff's office did not fully investigate Emily's disappearance and then her death and did not investigate fully into Jerry Anderson. But Stafford is standing his ground. He admits when something should have been done. He's not making up excuses.
He's still on the stand. I don't know if he'll be there all day or not. C-ya around 3:30.

There you go folks in a nut shell. The lead investigator in a capital murder case admitting on the witness stand that he nor his assigned investigators that he was directly responsible for did not do the things they should have in this case. This explains his personal visit to Jerry that he testified to earlier. He realized his investigators had missed the boat on this one and he hoped that Jerry would breakdown and admit the crime to him and therefore cover his backside. I got to give him credit at least he is admitting they screwed up. Sounds the new Sheriff needs to make some adjustments in the Detective Division to me.
"It didn't get done. There's no reason for that."
Oh yes there is a reason.... I think it's because Stafford is completely incompetent.
It's not too late. Even if you don't have the glasses, talk to the Quality Inn. Find out what room the glasses were in. Find out who rented the room on that day.
Stafford may be incompetent, but isn't there someone in that legal department who is the slightest bit curious?
WHO RENTED THAT ROOM?
Let's see he was in Duncan, SC to get the truck back to Caldwell County. Did no investigating that day down there. Remember to cold and getting dark. Got a call about glasses in hotel Jan 8--Did nothing--must have been to cold that day also. Got a list of names from hotel in Jan--did not attempt to call anyone until Nov.--could not have been the weather to stop using the phone in the office--How can you admit these kind of things in open court and in front of Emily's family who was depending on you and your people to bring their loved ones murderer to justice?
Aaaaaarrrrgggg!
Investigators, call the Quality Inn now. This case could be over in 10 minutes.
Please someone show they have a brain. Please, anyone out there from Caldwell Police Department. This is your big break to solve the murder and take over Stafford's job.
Do the right thing. Call the Quality Inn.
10 minutes.... we are talking about 10 minutes worth of work to solve a murder.
Please help Emily's family.
Please.
JM,
You are a reporter right? You investigate things right? Can't you call the Quality Inn and ask who was renting the room where the glasses were found?
Please do this. Sweet talk the manager. Tell him what's at stake. Tell him about all the great PR for Quality Inn, that they helped solve a murder.
Jen, this is why some reporters win the Pulitzer Prize. Jen, this is your moment.
Please, please, please.
Allison.. not quite sure why you think a call to the Quality Inn at this point would make any difference at all. The room wasn't rented to Emily Anderson.. Or Jerry Anderson. I don't really think the person who murdered Emily would ACTUALLY register under their own name. Besides the fact that this crime was committed over 18 months ago.
Best case scenario.. Law Enforcement gets a name. They start trying to track down that person. Said person is probably in Texas.. or points beyond. It's going to take a little more than 10 minutes to find this person. In fact.. at this point.. I'm not sure the person could be found by the end of this trial.. ESPECIALLY if the murderer doesn't want to be found.
So pretty much this case is based on some very, very, far reaching circumstantial evidence and a few points of unusual behavior by a husband whose wife is missing and then turns up murdered. You talk about a bit of overreaching by the investigators. And who wouldn't do some things that could later be misconstrued as suspicious if their spouse suddenly goes missing and is later murdered. I agree with ret-investigator, it's time for some house cleaning in the Detective Division in the Sheriff's office.
justwatchin no offense, but it's an attitude like that which has created this mess in the first place. It's not worth it to test the rape kit. It's not worth it watch the video tapes. It's not worth it to bring a photo of Emily on the interviews.
Too many people have done nothing for too long and it got this case nowhere.
So what's wrong with actually putting some effort into finding the killer.
Maybe, just maybe, the person registered at the hotel with a credit card. Maybe, just maybe, the person registered to have an affair with Emily and the killing happened after love went bad. Why would that be so hard to believe. So maybe he did use his real name.
One phone call to parts unknown and he is picked up by local police. Total elapsed time of 4 minutes.
You telling me the killer's name might be on the rental agreement for that room but you don't think it's worth taking a look? Is that what you are saying? Really?
Malaise might be letting a killer walk. Malaise means you might be his next victim. Or your daughter. That isn't worth a little effort to you?
This has got to be the biggest joke of a trial on record!!!..What idiot would not follow up on glasses that could have possibly been Emily's....Maybe I'll take a drive to the Quality Inn and investigate this case myself...I feel so bad for Emily's family-to have to listen to such idiots botch this case....Somebody pleaase tell me they have something up their sleeves we just don't see yet...
Hey Allison...I might just write the Governor myself about how stupid Caldwell County investigators are. Someone should lose their jobs over this shit!!!
I swear---I have never ever heard anything like this....Tink out
After reading the local newspaper (NewsTopic) on line today it will be interesting to see what kind of spin the reporter there puts on todays testimony from the Maj.--From reading their earlier reporting it sounds like they are being careful not to say to much to their readers about their Sheriffs Office messed investigation. Is your local paper into the plotics game in Caldwell County?
So the local paper is trying to "cover up" the Caldwell County mess....oh this is great...I should contact a good friend of mine at the Charlotte Observer and que him to this blog....some eyes would really open then!!!
All I'm saying is it's way TOO little.. WAY too late. If the detectives start investigating now.. they have to provide all that evidence to the defense (I can see Ms. Dubs now) .. who will have to review it.. the trial will stall.. and the jurors will be beyond pissed.. that is if the evidence is even allowed. I can't speak for this judge.. but does it really make sense that he would allow a phone call made today into these procedings? This.. a phone call that SHOULD have been made 18 months ago. (There is absolutely NO reason it couldn't have been made.baring cold weather) Can the prosecution actually start their investigation on prompts from the DEFENSE, in court?? Are they going to start looking for the glasses today too? Are they going to request phone records from the Mexicans.. submit the rape kit.. test the truck for fingerprints.. come up with some more paint chips?? This trial is in the toilet for the prosectution.. and they know it. They should drop the charges and try to save their own butts.
If I'm thinking right the eyeglasses are going to come up again--I think the defense has something about them or has them--I also think the defense probably has more about the Hispanic guy Reyes or what ever his name is--I think the defense has more on this case than the state and i think the state knows it--Let's see what happens then--I'm not passing judgement on anyone group but this will never make it to the jury unless the state has something else other than what they have shown so far--Who else can testify for them that hasn't already at least twice.
Oh honey...it way to late for the Prosecution...they have missed that boat about 2.5 weeks ago.
guestion for allison. Could your name be patty r?
Aren't you all forgetting the gun shots heard that morning? And if the defense is checking on all these comments, more power to her.
He still did it. What little evidence they have points to him.
You all are not doing anything but feeding Dubbs with a bunch of crap.
Howdoyouknow?????...It seems to me you know Mr. Anderson did it...Maybe you could drive to Gastonia and supply the Keystone Cops with the evidence they need because their proof sucks plain and simple...I heard gunshots that morning, mine....Maybe it was me.......
