Deliberation is underway
Well ladies and gentlemen, we are in deliberation mode. The jurors just went back to begin deliberation. Wow. This is it, y'all. We could know something soon or something later. You can never tell when a jury will come back. I have no idea. I really don't know y'all. I just don't know what to believe. Why would Emily Anderson not use her cell phone - or for that fact, if it was dead, why not make a collect call to a family member or friend. If she was still alive on Tuesday after reported missing on Thursday, as the Quality Inn employees said they saw her, why not call one person. You would know they would be worried about you. And if she was found in the same clothes she was reported missing in, who wears the same outfit for nine days in a row? Or was it a coincidence she had the outfit on again? And, this doesn't make sense, if Jerry killed her, why report her missing in the outfit he killed her in? And, if he did take her body to Duncan, S.C., how does his cell phone hit towers in Granite Falls at 2:56 and Lenoir around 5? There are so many questions - so what does that mean? Reasonable doubt? I just don't know. I am so glad I'm not a juror. What a hard decision, or maybe it will be easy for them. I think time will tell. I wonder this: Do you think they already have their minds made up? I know they are told not to have an opinion yet, but they are humans. But in that respect, I don't have my mind up yet. I have heard everything. Wow.
This has been great. I know it has been hard, please don't think I am enjoying any one's misery, because I am not that kind of person. I love my job. I enjoyed a different aspect of it by being in court the entire time of opening statements to deliberation. I want to say thanks to everyone who viewed the blog. I want to thank all the commenters. Sometimes I wish we could have been a little nicer to each other. But I appreciate anything commented about the blog itself or me - mean or nice. Criticism is important in my job. But I hope this blog was helpful to y'all - to family and friends who loved Emily but couldn't be here because of distance - and I know there are many of y'all - and to those who love and support Jerry and can't be here, and for those who just are interested in this case. Thanks.
Now, I am going to blog the verdict. Unless, for some reason, the judge says no computers - but he hasn't the whole time - I will blog the verdict as soon as it comes out their mouths. I can't say when, but I will try to give y'all a heads up. It really could be by the end of the day or it could be next week... Like I said, time will tell.

The moment of truth is upon us. This is kind of exciting !!
sawmillman-your predicted verdict?
Not Guilty the prosecution did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Jerry did it ! Too many flaws in there investigation !!
And too add a bit more too many flaws in there theories .
I agree.....
My heart is racing with anticapitation of the verdict-I hate to go to lunch. Wonder what Jerry is feeling right now?
Jerry is probably a bit anxious I would presume !
I hope that they come back hung,if not guilty.
I believe it happened the way Bellas said!
I am just sick that CCSD did such a poor job proving anything.
You shouldn't believe what you don't know jaseven . That being said Bellas was grasping at straws with his last theory . Too many red flags in this case . I honestly think notice i didn't say believe that Jerry didn't do this .
you know what really gets to me-if the jury comes back not guilty-Jerry walks-He could then shout from the high heavens that he murdered his wife and know one can touch him-CCSD & Bellas should have really dug in and got the correct evidence to convict this man-
I just ran the miles from Sawmills, NC to Duncan, SC on yahoo maps--The shortest way is 108 miles--No way he could have made that trip in that time with those vehicles.
ret-you are exactly correct-no way that truck could have run from Caldwell county and back in 4 hours!-not on a good day-
Jen, I agree this blog and forum was an interesting experiment. But, and I don't know if this comment is directed at you or your publishers, but if you are going to have a forum, you have a moral and LEGAL obligation to moderate the content.
If a poster is making death threats against others, like it or not, your company needs to remove such content. Or you are a party to the illegal action.
I'm not saying censor opinions, but yelling fire in a movie theater and promoting death threats is not protected under the first amendment.
And on a more common-sense and community minded note, why would your newspaper not delete the death threats? Is that what your newspaper wants to be? A vehicle for menacing people to terrorize others for their opinions? If a person wrote a letter to the editor threatening someone, would your paper publish it? I think not. So why is that acceptable online?
Now the lawyers are involved and we'll have to let them sort it out.
I think your newspaper has tainted what could have been an award winning experiment.
Hmmm? The Duncan, SC and back theory?
A questionable tactic for sure- not just for the reasons mentioned already (which are enough) but even more questionable in that the tactic SHOULD completely backfire on the prosecution if the jurors consider this comment irrelavent due to the fact that nothing from the trial was submitted to substantiate it.
Placing yourselves in the position of the jury (which is what we all love doing anyway) would you question this bit of info?
Maybe wonder why it was presented without first proving this theory -Is the prosection simply inventing this theory ???
Pining for emotion?
Or... shooting for a hung jury because they feel Murder 1 is a lost cause ???
All the defense needs is one tiny particulate of doubt to set this man free.
I have no dog in this fight therefor, I could not be more objective...
But now, it seems the prosecution has insulted the jury by attempting to leave them with an unproven theory.
That is an attourney's privalege, but I would not want this person representing me in a jaywalking charge.
How would you treat this item if any of you were sitting on this jury?
To me Hudson-ite it looks like a last ditch effort to get the jury on there side !
allison - not sure what "death threat" you are talking about....I have been reading all of the comments under each posting & did not see anyone threatening you...the comment that was made indicated that if you were to get with Jerry, you should watch your back for the gun shot from him. You should think a bit before you give Jen such a hard time!!!
I just mapped out from sawmills to duncan using superpages and it says it would take 1 hour and 42 minutes. So yes, it could be done in 4 hours!
I'm with Jordan on that explanation of the gun shots to the back allison.
Jennifer , fine job. Ignore the negative comments,
Ken Lemon reported somebody had to leave court because they shouted out is that true?
Easy folks...
Blogs are a forum for opinion and are not / should not be considered NEWS... nor should blogging take place under the direct influence of a news provider.
(blogspot.com is not affiliated with Hickory Daily Record)
In here, we are all posting comments in refernce to a blog...
There is not and should not be any confusion as to whther or not this is a news outlet, it is not.
We should not hold Jennifer's comments up for scrutiny the same as we would her articles for the Hickory Daily Record.
These comments are OFF the record.
blogspot and the HDR are two separate entities with very different guiding principles.
This is her outlet for opinion and "play by play," (if you will)
not to be associated with her duty as a reporter.
I am sure she is aware of this as any reporter must be.
So lets make sure we distinguish the two from each other and use this forum to give opinions on the case.
Thank you JM for the great reports.
The Hickory Daily Record don't know how important you are to all of us,A job well done!
Jordon; I'm with you no threat!!
Allison; Chill, its the ones like you that ruin good things,no one threatened you,if you can't take a little salt don't eat?
If you want a real answer to the drive to Duncan drive it.
It can be done!

go Jordan...go Jordan-Allsion, it was not meant as a threat...only a comment of what could happen if you end up w/Jerry....
Tinkerbell, as I said, we'll let the lawyers sort it out.
my opinion to how the truck ended up in SC is Jerry had help doing it! i believe he killed her & had one of the workers to take her & the truck off, that's why he had them to clean up the mess right away. that's just what i think, my opinion. i do hope that the right person is convicted & i think that person is Jerry. sorry if some of yall dis-agree with me, but it's what i think. it's all up to the jury!!
